Immortality

The long, winding road of Glen’s career reaches its conclusion.

Fall 1986

Knoxville, Tennessee

“Argh!” yelled Glen as he lifted his opponent into the air. The crowd cheered wildly as he twisted his upper body and nailed his scoop slam.

The other wrestler, Jerk Manson, lay motionless in the center of the ring, and the crowd buzzed at the opportunity Glen now had.

Here it was.

He was going to deliver his signature move: The Golden Elbow.

Glen obliged his loyal fans and stood over Jerk Manson, pulled off his elbow pad and threw it out into the crowd. He ran to the side of the ring and bounced off the ropes, then ran back over Jerk Manson’s body and bounced off the other ropes.

As he came back to mid-ring, he felt it. That familiar pain in his knee that caused a ripple of electric shock up and down his leg, effectively making it useless.

The crowd gasped as he fell to the mat and dropped his elbow nearly near foot short of Jerk Manson’s head. Glen rolled over onto his back and clutched his knee and grimaced his face from the excruciating pain.

Glen could hear the screams of surprise and concern, and looked up to see Jerk Manson had gotten to his feet and climbed to the second rope. Unfortunately, Glen was powerless as he watched Jerk Manson land a splash across his body, knocking the wind out of his chest.

He gasped for air while he heard the three slaps of the referee’s arm against the mat.

DING DING DING!!!

It had happened… again.

Glen’s knee failed him…again.

Glen had failed the fans… again.

The big return from his critical injury had not gone smoothly the past year, and he was exhausted with competitive impotence and humiliation.

Something had to change.
