Immortality Pt. 7

Something begins to change within the aging wrestler.

London, England

Winter 2000

It had been a full six months since Glen had joined 21st Century Wrestling, a promotion based in England where the hate for him also ran deep. The upstart wrestling league was filled with wrestlers half of Glen’s age, which hadn’t made it easy on him.

However, he was the champion.

The wrestling world wasn’t exactly shocked; Glen had cheated in every match and screwed over every wrestler who stepped in front of him.

“Glen, what are you thinking about?” asked his agent, Thomas Torbenson.

Ever since Glen 1993, his agent had been a worm-tongue, constantly pushing Glen in the direction of glory no matter what.

The big wrestler sat on his private locker room’s bench and looked down. Beads of sweat dropped and splatted onto the floor. He took a moment before starting to take off his elbow pads.

“Nothing, Thomas,” Glen replied. “Nothing.”

Glen had just wrapped up another match, this time against a guy named Ace Carter.

A guy? More like a kid.

The young man had recently confronted Glen with the story about how Glen had screwed over his father in the 90s, ending the other wrestler’s career. Ace had sought to avenge his father but fell short against Glen’s chicanery.

Thomas Torbenson stood above Glen in his signature red suit.

“Forget about that kid, Glen,” his agent encouraged. “At this point in your career, you know you’re going to be battling generations of rivals. Just keep moving forward and the money will come in. And that’s what we’re here for right?”

There was turmoil brewing within the old wrestler from Tennessee. He felt exhausted from the long winding road of his youth, the Vietnam War, his heyday of stardom in the 1980s, losing his family, and then doing whatever it took to stay on top.

“Yeah, the money.”

Perhaps it was something about how Ace Carter’s story had reminded Glen about exactly what he had become. Or perhaps it was the hollow feeling he had when he was in the ring.

Something was changing inside him.
