“I don’t know, Brandon,” his dad warned. “This may not be such a good idea.”
“Please, dad?” the young oncology patient replied. “He came and visited me when I was down and out… it’s only right that I do the same for him.
Brandon had been wanting to visit Jumpstart’s hospital room since the moment the now-retired wrestler had arrived. Violence’s brutal beatdown of Jumpstart at the Season 5 finale had left him in a coma just two floors up in the hospital.
Of course, it was just days before Jumpstart had visited Brandon before the retirement match at Starfall. To Brandon and his family, it was obvious how much Brandon’s unwavering support had meant in turning Jumpstart’s public perception around.
Brandon simply wanted to return the favor.
His father furrowed his brow at Brandon, and then his gaze softened. Brandon’s father knew that it was Jumpstart’s support that helped Brandon’s incredible progress in his battle against cancer.
“Well, alright, Brandon,” his father acquiesced. “The nurse already said that there wouldn’t be any harm in you going in there… just be prepared. I think Jumpstart is still pretty much unresponsive. Maybe your voice could help?”
The young boy smiled and thanked his dad, who gently pushed open the hospital room door open for his son. Brandon carefully rolled his wheelchair into the dark room where the bleeps and bloops of medical equipment composed the ambiance of sound.
And there he was.
Brandon gulped at the sight of Jumpstart lying in his bed. The veteran Canadian wrestler was mostly bandaged across all parts of his body. Tubes entered various parts of his body pumping in various concoctions of medicine.
He slowly rolled up to the side of Jumpstart’s bed, and it was obvious that Jumpstart was completely unconscious. Tears fell from Brandon’s eyes, and he couldn’t think of doing anything else other than just expressing his feelings.
“Hey, Jumpstart,” he began. “It’s me, Brandon. I just wanted to… well…”
The young man thought carefully what he wanted to say, even if Jumpstart probably couldn’t hear him.
“I know you had your ups and downs with Golden Pro Wrestling, and it wasn’t like any other part of your career… but I never gave up on you. And you know what, after we met, you never seemed to give up on me either.”
The medical equipment continued its rhythmic sounds in the dark room.
“I don’t care what happened at Starfall. I hate that Violence guy. But… it doesn’t really matter. The world saw you go out the same way you came in. Everyone loved you out there, just the way it was meant to be.”
The door to the room cracked open, and Brandon’s father peeked his head in.
“Hey bud, just a few more seconds, okay?”
Brandon watched the door close and then tried to find a way to wrap up his emotions.
“Anyways, Jumpstart. I know you’ll pull out of this… and if you need me… well, you know where to find me. Just a couple floors down.”
As he rolled his wheelchair back to the hospital room door, he took one last look at Jumpstart.
“Thank you, Jumpstart. From everyone.”
